Coach Yourself Out of Overwhelm

Overwhelm is not a circumstance. It is a response to one. This tool walks you through five coaching sections that will help you name what is actually happening, find the real source, challenge the thinking keeping you stuck and take the next obedient step forward.

Set aside 20 to 30 minutes. Answer honestly. Your responses save automatically.

Section One

Name What Is Actually Happening

Before you can move through overwhelm you have to stop and name it precisely.
Overwhelm is almost always a response to a thought about a situation, not the situation itself. Most of what feels catastrophic in the moment is the story layered on top of the facts. This section asks you to strip that story back and look at what is literally, factually true.
"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)
Question One
What am I feeling right now? Describe it without editing or judging it.
Question Two
Is this a fact or is this a thought I am having about a fact? What is the difference?
Question Three
If I stripped out every adjective, every worst-case projection and every catastrophic ending, what is literally true right now?
Question Four
What is the actual list? Not the feeling about the list. The specific, countable, real items on the list.

Section Two

Find the Real Source

Overwhelm is often protecting something. Usually a decision you have been avoiding.
Overwhelm rarely comes from the volume of tasks. It comes from one decision sitting at the centre of everything that has not been made. Until that decision is made, everything around it feels impossible to move. These questions help you find it.
"The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD shall be safe."
Proverbs 29:25 (NKJV)
Question One
What decision am I using this feeling to avoid making?
Question Two
What would I have to take responsibility for if I moved forward today?
Question Three
What am I actually afraid will happen if I do this?
Question Four
Am I waiting for permission? And if so, whose permission and why do I need it?

Challenge the Thinking

The thoughts creating the overwhelm are not neutral. They have a source. And they can be questioned.
Should thinking, perfectionism, people-pleasing and borrowed timelines are the four most common thinking patterns underneath overwhelm. They all feel like truth. None of them are. This section helps you identify which ones are operating and question them directly.
"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."
Romans 12:2 (NKJV)
Question One
Whose timeline am I measuring myself against right now?
Question Two
Is the standard I am holding myself to one God gave me or one I invented?
Question Three
Am I calling perfectionism excellence? What is the real difference between the two?
Question Four
Whose agenda is actually filling my calendar and my head right now?

Section Four

Find the Next Step

You do not need to see the whole path. You need the one step that is in front of you right now.
Overwhelm expands when you try to solve everything at once. It contracts when you identify one specific, concrete, doable next action. These questions help you locate that step without the noise of everything else crowding it out.
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV)
Question One
If I already knew what to do, what would it be?
Question Two
What is the ONE thing, not the ten things, that would move me forward today?
Question Three
What has God already told me to do that I have not yet done?
Question Four
What would I tell a client who came to me with exactly this situation?
Section 5 of 5
Section Five

Make the Decision

The work of this tool ends here. What you do next is the only thing that matters now.
You have named what is happening, found the real source, challenged the thinking and identified the next step. Now there is only one thing left. The decision. Not the perfect decision. The next obedient one. This section holds space for that.
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."
Joshua 1:9 (NKJV)
Question One
What is the cost of not moving? Not the cost of moving. The specific cost of staying exactly where you are.
Question Two
Who is waiting on what I keep postponing?
Question Three
What is my next obedient step? Not my next perfect step. My next obedient one.
Question Four
What would I do today if I genuinely believed God would meet me in the middle of it?

You have done the coaching work. Now commit to the one thing that moves everything else.

"Commit your works to the LORD, and your thoughts will be established."
Proverbs 16:3 (NKJV)
Decision
The one thing I am choosing to focus on first.
Action

Accountability
